Arkansas University Students Win Poultry Industry Award
RALEIGH, N.C.--Poultry science students at the University of Arkansas
have been awarded a $3,000 grant for their initiative which aims to
improve the public’s understanding of the poultry industry.
The award is courtesy of Reach Teach Learn―a Pfizer Animal Health Global
Poultry project―which invited agriculture students across the U.S. to
demonstrate how they could open a dialogue with consumers and enhance
the perception of the poultry industry and its products.
Through an online video submission, the University of Arkansas Poultry
Science Club detailed their Poultry Education Program (PEeP), aimed at
enlightening young people who have little experience with agriculture or
knowledge about where their food comes from.
“In a practical program that has already proved successful, we lead
children and young people through a series of displays and hands-on
activities such as identifying feed ingredients, classifying eggs
according to their size, and candling eggs for quality,” said Katie
McGehee, university club member. Robbie Moody, Pfizer Global Poultry
Regional Marketing Director, said the University of Arkansas should be
congratulated for their initiative.
“The students recognized that a lot of young people today aren’t aware
of how food ends up in supermarkets or on plates―and their education
program aims to improve that knowledge and understanding.
“I would like to congratulate the University of Arkansas Poultry Science
group for helping create an open dialogue with consumers and positive
perceptions of the poultry industry and its products.”
The club plans to use its grant to expand the PEeP, to provide the best
resource in the state for poultry education and to further share their
knowledge with more students and community members.
Mr. Moody said: “We are extremely pleased with the outcome of our fourth
annual Reach Teach Learn project and the effort we had from University
students. Through this project, which will continue again in 2012/2013,
we hope to encourage young people to use their passion for agriculture
to spread the word as early as possible about what we do and what it
takes to do it.”
